Cosplay for newbies-Cosplay location tips

When looking to create your own cosplay suit (assuming that is you don’t intend to just buy a complete one online), it helps to learn the very important rule of thinking outside the box. As unusual and specific as most characters costume components are, sometimes the most difficult piece can be easily found in the least likely of places. For starters, let’s begin with where to find fabrics. Stores like Joann Fabrics or local fashion stores like Vogue or any nearby material store can help you find the fabrics and materials you need from sewing needles, patterns, threads, and all sorts of important components. When it comes to patterns, be sure to keep an open mind and look at other kinds of outfits that may appear close or seem like they carry a good likeness to the character you are trying to create. Halloween patterns for costumes like pirates, Jedi knights, or ball gown dresses may be used and modified when using the pattern to create different (or all) sections of your costume. It’s important to make sure you can sew or know someone who can sew WELL if you’re trying to build your costume.

When it comes to other parts like gloves, boots, headbands, holsters, or odd things like wings and weapons, it helps to literally look everywhere. Sometimes your character’s gloves can be found in the garden section at Home Depot, or if your character has purple or different colored hands, latex gloves from a hospital or nearby Walgreens may have the very same colored gloves you need for your hands. Everything from scuba goggles to plastic skeleton bones or cardboard can be cut, shaped, resized, and modified to fit your costume’s various needs. Of course, local costume shops or Halloween stores will be more than able to help you out with make-up, eye contact lenses, wigs, masks, prosthetic teeth or limbs, so I recommend trying to find a costume store that is open all year around and not just during the Halloween season. Now all of these things like wigs and fabrics can be extremely expensive, it depends on how far you are willing to pay, drive or go for to get the parts you want.

Of all the places I can recommend to go searching for cosplay parts, the best in terms of variety and being easy on your wallet is you’re local Good Will store or thrift shops or even garage sales. Any store that takes in goods and resells them like clothes and toys would be an ideal spot for cosplay parts. Why you may ask? Because people donate and give away all kinds of things from golf clubs, chairs, toys to sweaters and vests etc. Good Will and thrift stores can carry virtually any kind of piece of clothing you could need from shirts, vests, ties, hats, shoes, I’ve found many perfectly identical costume parts for my cosplays in Good Will stores more times than I have in any costume or Halloween shop. It may take some rummaging and searching and sometimes you may not always find just what you want and may have to modify it to suit your needs better, but more often than not, you would be truly surprised at how many perfect cosplay parts you can find at thrift stores or stores that take donated clothes and toys and such. As they say, one man’s trash is another man’s gold, or in this case, one man’s donation is another man’s cosplay part.

Cosplay for newbies:How to choose your first cosplay

How to choose your first cosplay

When it comes to getting into the world of Cosplay (short for costume play), it can become a very expensive, daunting, exhausting and complicated hobby to partake, but if handled right, it can serve to be a wonderful and satisfying hobby for many years to come. However, when you’re starting out for the first time, it is very important to make a cosplay that is simple, easy, and inexpensive since as a newbie, you can’t jump into the big leagues at the drop of a hat. Everyone started at the bottom at one point and if you’re reading this, then you’re at the bottom and want to work your way to the top. Best characters to try out for newbies, as far as the simplest ones goes, would be characters that dress in normal clothes and by normal clothes, I mean characters with easy, normal looking, average every day clothes you might find an average person wearing. Someone like L or Light Yagami from “Death Note” for example, Takizawa from “Eden of the East” (or anyone from that show for that matter) or any character from the music inspired show “BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad” would also serve as simple, average cosplays for newbies.

Though, even if you are a newbie at cosplaying, it helps if your dress up as someone recognizable even if it is a simple cosplay. For example, Ash or Misty from the well-known series “” are very easy cosplays to perform and VERY recognizable and expected at local conventions or cosplay gatherings.  Characters from “High School of the Dead” are also easy to perform, though they will require some intentionally designed “wear and tear” such as scrapes, scratches, or blood splatter marks to coincide with the zombie nature of the show. That’s another great thing about cosplaying 101, very simple things such as splatter marks or a rip or tear can help turn an everyday outfit into an iconic outfit or uniform that matches a character from an anime series. Characters from the show “Ranma ½” are a bit more geared towards oriental styled (naturally) but still, many of their uniforms and outfits are very simple and would make for very easy beginners outfits.

Usually anime that are geared in real life (normal realities devoid of robots, aliens, vampires etc) are usually the best kinds of shows to find ordinary looking characters for cosplay. Best examples of this include almost every character in “Black Lagoon” like Revy, Rock, or Benny. Suguru Misato and his teacher Ms. Shikijou from “Mahoromatic” would also fit this category. However, sometimes even bizarre, fantasy set shows can have normal looking characters despite their abnormal settings or sci-fi elements; like Kyon from “Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” or Sassi and Arumi, both from “Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.” Always popular with every fan are characters from acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki, who has made several films with famous characters that are fun to pull off and easy to recognize like Kiki from “Kiki’s Delivery service”, Ponyo and Sosuke from “Ponyo”, or Chihiro from “Spirited Away.

Durarara Costumes Cosplay

Yonejiro is a cosplayer from the U.S. Though having just entered the cosplay scene recently, Yonejiro has managed to fit in perfectly well. Matt from Death Note, Shizuo Heiwajima from Durarara and Keith Goodman from Tiger & Bunny are the characters that he has cosplayed so far. Let's get to know more about him!

Biography :

Name - Yonejiro - Drew
Place - United States
DOB - February 14
Fav anime - Tiger & Bunny, Ao no Exorcist, Sex/Love Pistols, Durarara, Zoids, and Code Geass

1. How about you introduce yourself to the readers first?

Yonejiro :-
Ah, hello everyone! Just your normal cosplaying college student from here in California. Trying to do well in both school and my cosplay xD

2. When did you realise your love for cosplaying and what inspired you to start cosplaying?

Yonejiro :-
Just last year in 2011 I went to my first convention and was blown away with all the cosplay. I hadn't really known much about it before hand, but once I went I knew I would have to start cosplaying soon! I'm still fairly new to cosplaying and it has been less then a year since I've started. I fell in love with it right away. Being able to really bring some of your favorite characters to life is what inspired me and keeps me going.

Durarara Costumes Cosplay

3. Why did you choose to cosplay Shizuo Heiwajima?

Yonejiro :-
Well, the series Durarara is one of my favorites. It's very interesting and different from other shows I've seen so I knew I had to cosplay from it. I particularly really was intrigued by Shizuo's deep character. He's more than just a guy with strength and an anger management issue.

4. Could you give the readers some tips on cosplaying Shizuo Heiwajima?

Yonejiro :-
Have fun with it! Don't be afraid of yelling out in anger and lifting things above your head. And always remember to look angry >D

Durarara Costumes Cosplay

5. What according to you are the pros and cons of cosplaying?

Yonejiro :-
There is always pros and cons to anything, especially cosplaying. I find though that the pros out weigh the cons significantly. You get to meet new people who share a common interest in that fandom (I even met my girlfriend who is an Izaya cosplayer), have fun in costume, create your cosplay from scratch or put it together (makes it more personal), and planning out how to make props. It's hard to explain just how much fun it really is. The cons are being able to afford all of it and time rush issues. Sometimes/most of the time cosplayers are working hard all the way up to the night before the convention.

6. What is your dream cosplay?

Yonejiro :-
That's tough... I think either Wild Tiger's mech suit or Sky High's hero suit, both from Tiger & Bunny. I have yet to work with armor yet and will want to eventually. Honestly, I really want to make something with a big cool sword too :b

Durarara Costumes Cosplay

7. Where do you often go for your photoshoots? How do you choose the background for a photoshoot?

Yonejiro :-
Either around conventions or anywhere with a nice city vibe. You really have to try to create the feel of where the characters in the anime.

8. Do you have any embarrassing cosplay moment that you'd like to share with us?

Yonejiro :-
Oh my, let's see. At one convention there was a lady who was walking right towards me. I thought they were going to ask me for a photo and I said "yeah, sure" and waved to them. They walked right past me over to their friend who was hanging out beside me. I was so embarrassed, my face turned red and I had to walk away.

9. Can you give some advice to the beginners out there?

Yonejiro :-
This might seem silly or wasteful at first but it really comes in handy eventually. Look through different cosplay tutorials even though you don't think you'll use them. I would read and watch many tutorials about random things that I didn't need then for my cosplay. But later on when I decided to make a street sign I remembered a few tutorials that gave me ideas about how to make it. It's always nice to have an idea about different materials, how they work, and different ways to do one thing.

Interview with cosplayer Moonblader -

Alice: Madness Returns Cosplay Costumes-procosplay.com

Moonblader is a dexterous cosplayer from Australia. She has crossplayed various characters such as Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass to Kai from Beyblade. Her cosplay work of Alice Liddell, from Alice: Madness Returns, has caught the eye of many. Moonblader was kind enough to share with us some info about her. Read on to find out more.

Biography :

Name - moonblader
Place - Sydney, Australia
DOB - 8th February
Fav anime - Code Geass, Sengoku Basara, Cowboy Bebop, Mononoke, Yami no Matsuei, Ouran High School Host Club

1. How about you introduce yourself first?

Moonblader :-
My name is Christie, known as moonblader online. I'm a student of graphic design and now 3D Animation. I've been into RPG games, anime/manga since since junior high and is still addicted! Though on the side I love my dosages of broadway musicals and tv shows like Merlin, Game of Thrones and Sherlock etc. to keep me sane in life.

2. What got you into cosplaying and for how long have you been cosplaying?

Moonblader :-
When I went to a convention for the second time in my life, I saw a few people cosplay from Kingdom Hearts, the Clamp series X-99 and Cardcaptor Sakura. (This was like... 2004/2005 so bear with me.) And they looked like they were having so much fun while looking absolutely wonderful, I was driven to give "dressing up" a go.

I started cosplaying near the end of 2007 but I actually began sewing my own costumes in 2008. So I should say I've been a cosplayer for around 4 to 5 years.

3. Why did you choose to cosplay Alice Liddell from Alice: Madness Returns?

Moonblader :-
One, this game needs more love as it really is one of the best games in 2011. Everything in it is so original, beautiful and yet so twisted. And two, Alice is such a suave and powerful character with a fabulous wardrobe! Who wouldn't want to cosplay Alice?

4. Could you give the readers some tips on cosplaying Alice?

Moonblader :-
Make up and hair is important to give her the right attitude (Not too emo, not too plain!) and strength like Alice has in the game. Try to find as much reference (like concept art or screenshots) to make your outfit as accurate as you can make it. Have fun and as tempting as it is ... try not to slice/bash anyone up! ;)

Alice: Madness Returns Cosplay Costumes-procosplay.com

5. How often do you cosplay? Is it something you do for conventions and events only?

Moonblader :-
I cosplay at least once a month or two. Sewing and making props helps me focus yet relax when I need some time away from my studies and work. ^^ I used to consider conventions the only time and place to cosplay, but now I'm learning to photoshoot more so I have more freedom with organising and making my outfits/props.

6. Do you have any favourite cosplayers that you admire and get inspired by?

Moonblader :-
I have alot of inspirations who push me forward to become a better cosplayer and person. Jun is a master in make-up and prop making. Stay has long been one of my idols even before I began cosplaying. And Saya who had always taught me to cosplay from the heart and never forget to have fun as that's how it started for everyone.

7. What according to you are the pros and cons of cosplaying?

Moonblader :-
The Pros of cosplaying are having fun dressing up as your favourite characters from your beloved games/manga/anime, making new friends, and learning so many different things like sewing techniques and extreme props making. The cons are mostly the tedious funds, time consumption and the continuously growing list of costumes you want to make once you start.

Alice: Madness Returns Cosplay Costumes-procosplay.com

8. How do you view yourself as a cosplayer?

Moonblader :-
I would like to consider myself a hard-worker and one who always tries to do their best. I know I am not the best cosplayer of this generation nor the prettiest girl of the block, but I can say for certain I am very happy with how far I've come so far as an artist and creator. I try to make costumes that mean alot of me and from stories (games, anime, manga) that I treasure in my past and present. Hopefully I can look back in the future with a silly grin and say, "... How the heck did I make that?! That. Is. Awesome."

9. In what way has cosplay changed your life?

Moonblader :-
Eventhough I consider cosplay as a hobby, it has added another dimension to my life. It gives me a chance to once in a while become someone else while being with friends I love and admire. And on the side, I'm always consistently learning something new and challenging myself to new levels of costumery and props making. It has challenged not only me, but my family too. I am grateful to them for adapting to this hobby as I know not everyone has the family support like I do. It forever was and will be a creative outlet in my life.

I love cosplay not only becasue I get to be someone else and create costumes, but because its an easy way to make friends who are into the same things as you are. Cosplay opens up conversation! I really didn't know what cosplay was, I just sort of figured if people dressed up at Scifi conventions that they must do it at anime conventions too. So I just sort of went with it. I was however inspired by other cosplayers work when I started making more costumes for myself. Yaya Han and Alisa-chan were huge inspiration to me when I was starting out back in 2001.

2. Why did you choose to cosplay Stocking?

HezaChan :-
She is my favorite character in the series besides Kneesocks. Not only do I like her personality, but I like her character design as well. All of her outfits are just too cute!

3. Tell us about your experience with cosplaying. What was your first cosplay?

HezaChan :-
I got into anime and manga when I was in middle school. Back then, there was only other person that I knew back then that was into it too. We ended up becoming best friends, and once we reached high school we both ended up finding out about a local anime convention. We both made Cosplay costumes of our favorite characters for the con not knowing that it was called cosplay or that other people would be doing it too. My first cosplay was Lime from Saber Marionette J. I love her character dearly and wanted to protray her at the convention.

4. How do you face your difficulties regarding cosplaying?

HezaChan :-
All costumes have parts which can be difficult to make or to figure out. When that happens I tend to take a break from it and think about the problem. Eventually I come up with a solution. But I have been known to throw a temper tantrum at certain parts of costumes that I've made. Haha~

5. How much time was involved in making the costume? Are you satisfied with the outcome of your efforts?

HezaChan :-
It depends on how much free time I have. If I had 2 weeks of time where I wasn't working at all, I could totally finish a costume in that amount of time. I tend want instant gratification, so I try to work quickly to achieve the goal of having the costume done as soon as possible. However, most of the time I'm working at my job, so I just use any time off that I can to make a costume. This can make me take a month or two to finish a costume.

6. What are you planning to cosplay in the future?

HezaChan :-
I have many costumes I want to make, but I feel as if I don't always have the time. But if I do I would love to cosplay Iron Mouse from Sailor Moon Stars, Sailor Uranus from Sailor Moon SuperS, Chu from Animal Magnetism, and Miku Hatsune (Sonic Costume).

Don't overwhelm yourself on your first project. Start with something simple. Remember, there are plenty of tutorials online to help you with your costume making -- and have FUN!!

I still remember the first time i made my first cosplay photoshoot with my group, my character was Nana Komatsu and I had to express her love with my partner who cosplayed Takumi.
